An Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) is an open-ended fund or investment trust that is traded on a securities exchange like a stock.  Most ETFs are index based and the performance of the ETF tracks the performance of the underlying index.

Exchange Traded Fund Application

ETFs are similar to mutual funds, except that shares in an ETF can be bought and sold throughout the day like stocks on a stock exchange through a stock broker.

ETFs also do not sell or redeem their individual shares at net asset value (NAV).
