Vanguard Total Stock Market

ETF Symbol: VTI

TWeekly annotated chart for Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF with technical analysishe Vanguard Total Market VIPERs ETF has formed an ascending triangle.  This is typically bullish;  but only if there is a breakout - in this case above $73.  Williams%R is in overbought territory but not important if breakout occurs.  On-Balance Volume is slightly bullish.  Aggressive traders should go long now. Conservative traders should wait until the breakout occurs. Normally September is a down month but not during a presidential election year.  All long positions should be exited below $69.

iShares MSCI EAFE Index Fund

ETF Symbol: EFA

Weekly annotated chart for iShares MSCI EAFE Index Fund with technical analysisThe iShares MSCI EAFE Index Fund has formed a wedge which is neither bullish nor bearish.  However the price is sitting right at the upper trend line of the wedge so traders should assume a retreat from here, probably down to the $46-$47 level.  It should be noted that historically the price tends to fall hard when it moves below the 40 week SMA so it is best to go short in anticipation of this event now.  A protective stop above the upper trend line should be placed in case the ETF unexpectedly moves higher.

PowerShares DB Commodities Tracking Index Fund

ETF Symbol: DBC

Weekly annotated chart for PowerShares DB Commodities Tracking Index Fund with technical analysis

PowerShares DM Commodities Tracking Index Fund price has has saddled up against a downward trend line.  In addition, Williams%R is in overbought territory.  These two conditions suggest that DBC is in for a short term correction.  Aggressive traders should enter a short position with a protective stop set above the trend line ~$30.

Vanguard REIT Index ETF

ETF Symbol: VNQ

Weekly annotated chart for Vanguard REIT Index ETF with technical analysis
The Vanguard REIT VIPERs has formed an ascending wedge.  This pattern is bullish until the eventual breakdown occurs then it becomes quite bearish.  Williams%R shows an ongoing bullish trend.  On-Balance Volume is slightly bullish.  Show caution with this ETF.  Aggressive traders could place a stop sell entry at or below $65 in anticipation of a breakdown from the wedge lower trend line.

iShares Barclays 7-10 Year Treasury Bond Fund

ETF Symbol: IEF

Weekly annotated chart for iShares Barclays 7-10 Year Treasury Bond Fund with technical analysis
The iShares Barclays 7-10 Year broke out from an ascending wedge earlier in the spring and has remained above the upper support level ever since.  This is a very bullish situation and look to continue the ride up.  A protective stop should be placed at $105.

Asset Allocation Feb 2012

Asset Hound Introduction

Welcome to the first edition of Asset Hound!  This report is issued monthly and provides Stock Market Students an introductory to technical analysis of Exchange Traded Funds (ETF) in the following areas:  Equal weighted U.S. Equities (VTI), International Equities (EFA), U.S. Real Estate (VNQ), Commodities (DBC) and Treasury Bonds (IEF). The analysis is based on weekly charts.

Asset analysis should be used to determine the overall percentage allocation of an investor's portfolio to each asset.  Once this is determined then the investor can substitute his or her favorite stocks in place of the associated ETF.  For example, if the asset allocation indicates that the investor should be in U.S. Equities then he or she could substitute any U.S. stock(s) in place of VTI ETF.  The asset analysis is provided monthly so that the investor isn't constantly adjusting their percentage asset allocation.

ETF Symbol: EFA

Weekly annotated chart for iShares MSCI EAFE Index Fundwith technical analysisThe iShares MSCI EAFE Index Fund has formed a symmetrical triangle - it is not clear which direction this ETF will go from here.  The Williams%R show a likely pullback (short term) while the On Balance Volume appears to be forming bullish divergence (long term).  If the ETF does break out from the triangle then it will encounter resistance at the $54.50 level.  Don't consider a long entry until the resistance level is broken.  On the bearish side, a short entry below could be considered.
